What Being a Christian Means to Me

What does it mean to be a Christian? I think we have a big misconception about this. A lot of times we believe that being a Christian means being part of a religion that restricts you from enjoying life, doing whatever you please, and having fun. And to outsider this is what they see when they see us and find out that we are Christians. But is that what Christianity really is?

To me being a Christian is not about having to “follow the rules” and not being able to enjoy life anymore. Look at it this way, playgrounds are surrounded by a fence. Is the playground a boring place or a prison just because it has a fence surrounding it? No! You simply know and accept that the fence is there to keep the children playing there safe. That is somewhat what Christianity is like. God gave us commands to follow and obey to keep us safe, not to keep us from having fun and enjoying life.

Being a Christian means that your way of life is going to be different from that of non- Christians. We are meant to have a life filled with love for others, even when they don’t deserve it. We are meant to show compassion and kindness even when others don’t deserve it. And this doesn’t mean that we will no longer be able to enjoy our lives. We have to live a life separated for God, but at the same time we have to connect to those who do not yet know Him. Do you think this means you should do whatever others do? Nope. The number one rule of being original is doing what no one else does. And that is what we should do as Christians. We should live such different godly lives while enjoying life so much that others will want to join in.

So being a Christian is living a life that honours God and shows others that God is cool. Remember, actions speak louder than words. If others know that you are a Christian, yet hear you speaking words that obviously don’t honour God, what kind of faith is that? Being a Christian is living a life separated for God. “Called out” is actually the meaning of the greek word for church. We have to live like we mean it. We can’t have one foot in this world and one foot inside of church. God wants all of us. He wants us to live a life for Him and others, not one for ourselves.

Just remember this, being a Christian doesn’t mean God is going to take all the fun away from your life. Nope. He will actually bring more joy and fulfilment into your life than you could possibly think. You just have to find it in a way that honours Him. You just have to live original. Just like God meant you to.
