God Works Best in Chaos, and He Brings Beauty Out of It

In the beginning, God made something out of nothing. The world was dark, void, and chaotic. There was no shape or beauty to be found, and the atmosphere was desolate. But with one word, one breath, light sprang forth and everything the Spirit of God touched became alive. He brought the chaos into order and filled the void with Himself. The shapeless gained beauty, and suddenly, earth was bursting with life. It’s in the emptiness that God can work in us and fill us with His life, giving meaning to every crevice of our hearts.

God did this to the world when He created it. He also did it with Adam. He took a meaningless heap of dust and shaped it into something beautiful. But He didn’t stop there. God took the empty shell of a man and breathed His life into him, forming a carrier for His very image. The emptiness once more was filled with life – God’s very own life.

God Takes the Broken and Gives It Meaning

Time and again across Scripture, God tends to pick the empty, void, and shapeless things and turn them into something beautiful. He takes the broken, the overlooked, and the hollow in order to fill them with Himself. He takes that which was meaningless and gives it meaning.

In the words of Paul, God takes the foolish things of the world to astound the wise. The Passion Translation puts it this way:

“But God chose those whom the world considers foolish to shame those who think they are wise, and God chose the puny and powerless to shame  the high and mighty. He chose the lowly, the laughable in the world’s eyes—nobodies—so that he would shame the somebodies. For he chose what is regarded as insignificant in order to supersede what is regarded as prominent, so that there would be no place for prideful boasting in God’s presence. For it is not from man that we draw our life but from God as we are being joined to Jesus, the Anointed One. And now he is our God-given wisdom, our virtue, our holiness, and our redemption.” – 1 Corinthians 1:27-30, TPT

It is the breath of God that brings significance to our lives. He is the one who takes the powerless, the weak, and the inconsequential in order to bring about a display of His glory. God takes a lump of clay and chooses it to carry His image. In the beginning, God made something out of nothing. Today, with you and with me, He takes nothing and turns it into something.

God Sees Potential In Our Imperfection

Many times in life, we disqualify ourselves before we even begin running the race because we take one look at our insignificance, our brokenness, and the cracks in our hearts, and we decide that we are too chaotic and void to become anything beautiful. But God takes one look at us and sees a new creation. He takes a lump of clay with the purpose of showing others what He is like.

God did this when He saw 120 people gathered in an upper room waiting and seeking His presence. He saw a room full of imperfect people, nobodies in the eyes of the world, and He decided that they had the kind of emptiness He could fill with Himself. At Pentecost, God made something out of nothing. Echoing the rumble of Genesis 1, the Spirit moved over a room full of people and new life burst forth. A new creation had been born.

This is what God loves doing, and He is still doing it today. He takes the emptiness of our lives and fills it up with Himself. He takes the cracks in our hearts and seeps through them with His love. He takes the darkness from our souls and replaces it with light so bright we cannot help but be transformed. He takes our weakness to display His glory. He gives us life, not just meaningless life, but a life filled with destiny and purpose.

God Transforms Us and Gives us Purpose

Many of us try to find a sense of meaning from different places. We try to draw it from our relationships, families, careers, talents, or passions. And yet, no matter how fervently we pursue it, we can never seem to reach far enough to obtain true meaning. At least, not the kind of meaning that is so deep-seated, there’s no doubt that we’ve found purpose.

But when we look to God, we find meaning. In Him, we find life. Like the chaotic world when He spoke the first word, in Him we find order, stability, and beauty. To quote Paul again, “…we draw our life from God as we are being joined to Jesus…” It is when we look to Him that we discover true meaning. When we take our brokenness and hand it in full surrender to God, He becomes the source of wisdom, virtue, holiness, and redemption. He takes us with all our chaos and turns us into a redeemed masterpiece. In Him, He takes all of our nothing and turns it into something.

God Is Sculpting a Beautiful Future For You

If you’ve struggled to find meaning, or if you’ve felt like maybe your life is too chaotic or dark or empty, that’s exactly where God likes to work! He loves to take hollow vessels and fill them up with His Spirit. He loves to take dirt and work it into a piece of art. The truth is, no matter where you find yourself, God is more than willing to come and fill you up. God is longing to give you life and purpose.

My prayer for you today is that you would see your life through God’s eyes. He is breathing new life into every crack and hollow place. God isn’t done with you yet!

“Here’s what Yahweh says to you: ‘I know all about the marvelous destiny I have in store for you, a future planned out in detail. My intention is not to harm you but to surround you with peace and prosperity and to give you a beautiful future, glistening with hope.’” – Jeremiah 29:11, TPT
