8 Books That Inspire Hope, Create Courage, and Encourage Bold Living
Have you read something recently that made you feel brave, inspired, encouraged, or like you could take on the world?
Today I want to share a list of books (both fiction and non-fiction) that will inspire you to be a little braver, live a little louder, and perhaps take that next tiny step toward becoming the incredible person God called you to be. Sometimes all you need is a little inspiration and a vision of who you could be and what you could do to take the next step forward. Maybe all you need is to be reminded that ordinary people can do extraordinary things if they say yes to the adventure and choose to take life one step at a time.
That said, let me recommend eight fantastic books that have inspired me, ranging from children’s books to historical romance to nonfiction.
Fiction
The Horse and His Boy by C. S. Lewis – Middle Grade, YA
A young boy escapes his taxing master and finds himself on a quest to save a neighboring country from an invading army. Along the way, he makes new friends, discovers more about his past and comes face to face with a legendary Lion. This book is part of the iconic Chronicles of Narnia and masterfully showcases beautiful hints of who God is and who he has called us to be. Just look at this quote:
“Who are you?’ ‘One who has waited long for you to speak.”
When Calls the Heart Series by Janette Oke – Historical Fiction, Christian Romance
A young woman pursues a teaching job in the Canadian west and encounters personal challenges, love, loss and a passion for serving and loving those around her. If you’ve seen the Hallmark series, do a complete brain re-haul and prepare yourself for a faith-filled adventure full of challenges and courage. Elizabeth’s character growth is genuine and deep. Her journey with God and her portrayal of her trust in Him will inspire you.
The Royals of Acuniel Series by Ashton E. Dorow – YA, Christian Romance
This series covers different Bible stories in creative, medieval retellings. From the story of Ruth to the prodigal son, Dorow weaves a medieval fantasy setting with beloved Bible stories and creates an intriguing world where her characters face challenges and have to come to terms with their circumstances and the calling God has placed over their lives. Something I loved about this unique take on Bible stories is how it presents personal faith and character growth in a genuine way without being sermonizing. I also really enjoyed how the main characters came to a place of trust and reliance on God by the end of each story.
The Green Ember Series by S.D. Smith – Children’s Fiction, Middle Grade
Anyone who has read it will tell you this is a classic. The Green Ember follows the story of Heather, Picket and Smalls, three rabbits on the quest to place the rightful ruler on the throne and defend their home from evil prey lords. This series has it all: action, battles, mystery and heartfelt moments that will leave you reaching for your box of tissues. While it is written for a younger audience, I believe that, like any good children’s book, it can be immensely enjoyed by older readers.
Now for the promised, non-fiction recommendations.
Non-fiction
The Crucified Life by A.W. Tozer – Discipleship and Christian Living
We’ve all read it: “Pick up your cross and follow Me.” But what does this actually mean? A.W. Tozer presents a challenging explanation of what it means to live for Christ and let go of self. If you are looking for a book to deepen your relationship with the Lord, challenge your faith and maybe even encourage you to give your all to God, this is the book for you.
The Pursuit of God by A.W. Tozer – Christian Living
Yes, I’m recommending two books by the same author because I thoroughly enjoy his insights. The Pursuit of God is a thought-provoking book that will make you ache to go beyond what you’ve seen and experienced in order to pursue more of God and experience him in real and genuine ways. I believe that hungry people surround themselves with hungry people. If you find yourself wanting to grow in your relationship with God and if you yearn to cultivate spiritual hunger, this book is for you.
The Empowered Lifestyle by Angelo Jeanpierre – Christian, Evangelism, Discipleship
Have you ever disqualified yourself from evangelism because you’re simply not that big, extroverted and loud personality? Same. But Jeanpierre’s take on evangelism lowers the stakes and makes evangelism something accessible to every believer. This book will show you how you are uniquely positioned to be a living witness of the Gospel and it will equip you with practical tools to go out into your ordinary world and create disciples.
Atomic Habits by James Clear – Habits, Personal Growth
This is probably one of the most popular nonfiction books currently out there. And with good reason. Not only is the content solid, but the material is accessible and practical. Clear takes readers on a journey from theory to practice and does so in a thoroughly engaging way. Learning about how your brain works and how to work with it, and not against it, has never been more enjoyable. If you are looking for a roadmap to better habits, this is the book for you.
I hope you enjoy these book recommendations and find a new book you love. Remember, no matter how ordinary you may be, you can do extraordinary things if you take life one brave step at a time.
What about you? What’s one book that has inspired you in your own life?
Until next time,
Anna
